Passport Clinic: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Who is eligible?
This clinic is for trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive people living in or around Atlanta. You must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to apply for a U.S. passport.
What documents do I need to bring?
Bring as many of the following as you can (we can help if you’re missing something):
-
Proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., birth certificate, naturalization certificate, existing passport)
-
A valid ID (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, military ID, student ID)
-
Social Security Number (if you have one)
-
Name change court order (only if, you’re seeking to update your name on your passport)
What if I haven’t legally changed my name?
No worries! You can still get a passport with your correct gender marker and current legal name.
If you’re interested in changing your name, if you want to update your name before the clinic, we encourage you to visit Destination Tomorrow, to apply for their upcoming name change clinic. They offer same-day notarization and court filing support.
Do I need a doctor’s letter or medical documentation?
No. You do not need any medical documentation or proof of gender transition to update the gender marker on your passport. You can self-select the marker that reflects who you are.
What if I don’t have a birth certificate?
We got you. We know that many trans folks don’t have easy access to their birth certificate, and you’re not alone.
If you’re missing this document, SnapCo will connect you with our partners at VoteRiders, who specialize in helping people get the documents they need.
VoteRiders will:
-
Help you request and retrieve your birth certificate
-
Cover the cost of getting it
-
Walk with you through the entire process
You don’t need to have your birth certificate on hand right now. Just let us know during registration, and we’ll make sure you’re supported from start to finish.
What gender markers can I choose?
You can choose M (male), F (female), or X (unspecified or non-binary), regardless of your legal or medical records.
Do I have to pay anything?
Nope! All passport fees are fully covered by SnapCo. This includes application costs and photo fees (if needed).
Do I need to bring a passport photo?
Nope. Photos will be taken on site at the passport office when you arrive, easy!
What if I already have a passport and want to update it?
Bring your current passport and any updated documents (like a name change court order). We’ll help you fill out the form to update your name and/or gender marker.
